About Denise

When my mother passed away early this year, we knew my dad would not be able to stay by himself due to early onset dementia, so he moved in with me. He needed companionship for the days we worked and someone to help with a few daily activities. I initially hired a third party, and it turned out to be a disaster because the caregivers did more babysitting and texting than engaging with him. I decided to hire someone myself, and that's when we met Denise. She came over shortly after I reached out to her so we could meet. I simply had one question to ask her, "What is your favorite movie?" (My dad is a huge movie fan.) She immediately responded with an older film; my dad smiled from ear to ear and they started talking about all of the old movies he liked. Prior to her first day, she requested I call her so she could know more about my dad and his needs. We spent an hour talking about how to diffuse his frustrations, talking about his past experiences (good and bad), his likes and dislikes etc. I appreciated her sincere effort and focus on my father's needs. She and my dad talk about all kinds of things, she has "movie dates" with him; they really have an amazing connection. Not only is she an excellent companion but she also takes care of him physically. She spots ailments, takes him to doctors' appointments and gives me full reports, provides suggestions for remedies and suggestions for avoiding potential disasters (like falls). She is also wonderful with pets. We had planned two vacations and Denise stayed over with my dad and took care of our dog, cat, and turtle. She has been amazing. Unfortunately, my dad's condition is worsening, so we moved him in to assisted living. I asked Denise to stay on through the rest of the month to help him with the transition. Denise has been absolutely wonderful, and my dad thinks the world of her. Her departure next month will be difficult for him and for me, but we're not cutting ties. I plan on asking her to watch my animals in the future and to take my dad out on a few outings that they planned, like the museum and the zoo. So if you are thinking of hiring Denise, stop thinking and do it immediately before some other lucky person gets her to care for their loved ones.
