I have experience with special needs as well, in my High School I took a temporary class that worked with special needs and I knew a young girl when I was younger that was born with heart problems that then effected her way of thinking/brain development. For years we were best friends even though I knew one day I would grow out of the mentality, but that doesn't change anything. She is still beautiful and we still keep in touch!
