About Melanie

"Learning is something students do, not something done to students." As an experienced, passionate and motivated educator and caregiver, I am excited to offer short or long term tutoring to elementary - middle school students who need to maintain last year's lessons or prepare for the upcoming year. I do not believe in a "one size fits all" model of teaching and my role as an educator is to work with parents to empower their children with the tools and strategies needed to become independent thinkers and problem solvers. I teach students to confidently access resources, build positive relationships, and make connections between their school lessons and the real world. For almost 15 years, I have provided Elementary, Middle and High School students with individualized tutoring, classroom instruction and behavioral support within the WDC Metro area. Starting as an AmeriCorps volunteer, I worked with Special Education students in the classroom and in small groups. Following that, I was a MS and HS Special Education teacher, a General Education MS Math teacher, and then a MS and HS Administrator. I look forward to working with you and hope to hear from you soon. Other Qualifications: Outside of the classroom, I have worked with families as a nanny, babysitter and tutor. As a babysitter/caregiver, I help the children with their homework, complete household tasks, cook nutritional meals, care for pets and provide school/activity pick up/drop off. I have provided overnight care for multiple children, for single and several nights in a row. I prefer to take children out for exercise and to explore the world around them, rather than spend time with video games and TV.
